Discovering and experiencing the culture of the Alps

An evolving project to preserve the precious thread of our origins, in which everyone — residents and visitors alike — is invited to take part.

The Val d’Ayas

From the slopes of Monte Rosa to the valley floor crossed by the Dora River, the Val d’Ayas is a land with the mysterious name “Ayas,” marked on maps since ancient times, permanently inhabited by skillfully organized communities and crossed by transalpine connecting routes.

Discovering and experiencing the culture of the Alps is the aim of the Val d’Ayas Open-Air Museum project: a narrative that, starting from material traces, leads to the discovery of humanity’s imprint as a creator of landscapes and of the fascinating history of mountain places that unfolds throughout the valley.

In the current historical moment, in which knowledge, protection, and enhancement — the three key principles of Italian cultural heritage — are finally shared by the Ministry of Culture with all Italians as both creators and users of culture, the extensive work of open cataloguing will find in the Val d’Ayas Open-Air Museum project — aimed both at creating on-site informational signage supported by the web and at organizing events — an equally open vehicle for transmission in its choices and contents.

Every place and every object already contains within itself the ways in which it should be approached. In the Val d’Ayas, not only must a unique landscape emerge, but it is also necessary to enhance the transformative work carried out on the mountains by the people who “constructed” cultural landscapes within a challenging natural environment — in other words, the culture of the place and of the people who lived here: an anthropological approach to a narrative that moves from material traces toward the rediscovery of the fascinating spirit of mountain places and of their history, largely unknown to those who visit the valley.

One more reason to appreciate and experience it at every time of year through a conscious tourism attracted by what is distinctive. A fundamental reason why the inhabitants themselves should not lose the precious thread of their origins and should know how to protect and pass on their heritage — a heritage of millennia of life. In this sense, the Val d’Ayas Open-Air Museum also aims to become a repository of recent memories from the protagonists of this Alpine world, fragmentary memories related to a world that has undergone total transformation since the Second World War and which today risks being lost.

An “archaeology of the present” of an era that has now disappeared and will soon also be forgotten (to borrow the title of a beautiful book by Sebastiano Vassalli), equally important for creating awareness of one’s own historical memory and as the foundation for the future.

Nel momento storico attuale che vede conoscenza, tutela e valorizzazione, le tre parole chiave del patrimonio culturale italiano, finalmente condivise dal Ministero della Cultura con tutti gli Italiani creatori e fruitori di cultura, il lavoro capillare di catalogazione aperta potrà avere nel progetto Val d’Ayas Museo Diffuso – finalizzato sia alla creazione di segnalazioni in loco con appoggio nel web sia di organizzazione di eventi – un veicolo di trasmissione altrettanto aperto nelle scelte e nei contenuti.

Ogni luogo e ogni oggetto ha già in sé le modalità con le quali deve essere trattato. Nella Val d’Ayas deve emergere non solo un paesaggio unico, ma occorre anche valorizzare l’opera trasformatrice della montagna da parte di uomini “costruttori” di paesaggi culturali in una natura difficile, ovvero la cultura del luogo e degli uomini che qui hanno vissuto: un approccio antropologico per una narrazione dai segni materiali alla riscoperta dello spirito affascinante dei luoghi della montagna e della sua storia per lo più sconosciuta a chi frequenta la valle.

Una ragione in più per farla apprezzare e vivere in ogni momento dell’anno da un turismo consapevole attratto dal particolare. Una ragione fondamentale perché gli stessi abitanti non perdano il filo prezioso delle loro origini e sappiano tutelare e trasmettere il loro patrimonio, patrimonio di vita millenaria. In questo senso Val d’Ayas Museo Diffuso vuole essere anche un raccoglitore di memorie recenti dei protagonisti di questo mondo alpino, memorie frammentarie relative a un mondo che ha visto una trasformazione totale dal secondo dopoguerra e che oggi rischiano di disperdersi.

Una “archeologia del presente” di un’epoca che ormai è scomparsa e che presto sarà anche dimenticata (usando il titolo di un bel libro di Sebastiano Vassalli), altrettanto importante per creare consapevolezza della propria memoria storica e base di un futuro.
